Titus 2:11-12
We looked at a grace that teaches in our last article, and we will continue that thought this week. Let’s dive in!
To live soberly is to think straight. When we get saved we begin to think through things, we begin to understand, our eyes are enlightened. Our mind is no longer filled with a foggy, drunken lust for the world. When we do fall into sin we begin to become drunk again. At least now, we have the Holy Spirit who will aid us in returning to sobriety.
To live righteously is to always do what is right in God’s eyes. Most men have a moral code or a moral conscience that they tend to live by. For example, the majority of people believe that human trafficking is wrong. Just about everyone believes that murder is wrong. But those same people will have no problem lusting after another woman, lying to their boss, or cheating to get ahead. Our fleshly, moral conscience is limited (and the worse society gets the more immoral the world’s conscience will get).
When we get saved we have a whole new moral conscience. Our new spirit that we are given (Hebrews 8:10-11) and the Holy Spirit who enters in and begins to live inside of us from that day forward changes us. We can now understand what it is to be righteous, both what we should do and should not do. We now are to begin to obey this new conscience that we have. We are to work towards and strive to be righteous before God.
Finally, we are to live godly. This is walking with Him every day and being transformed by Him. To become holy, full of love and truth. To teach godliness, one must be righteous, just as to be righteous, one must be sober. To be all these one must first receive the gift of grace that saves.
Godliness is the ultimate level we are called to reach. To do so, one must surrender everything to Him. One must die daily (1 Corinthians 15:31). If we fail to do so, we will fail to be godly. We must surrender all of ourselves to Him because we are still a sinful people and we need Him to change us from a sin filled Christian to a godly Christian. He must increase in us and we must decrease (John 3:30). That is the only way for us to become the type of Christian men and women that we are called to be.
All of this is only possible through the grace of God. He is the One who gives us the free gift of salvation. All we must do is receive it. He is also the only One who can make us godly. He is the One who does all the work. All we need to do is surrender and allow Him to do the good work. It is God who doing a great work in us from the first day until now. It is God who works in us both to will and do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13).
