Inevitable

Ephesians 1:21

We are getting close to the conclusion of Ephesians 1. The remaining verses focus on the power of God, something we have already looked at in previous articles on this chapter. I do want to encourage you to keep in mind the verses we have already dug into as well since these verses hold even more power when we understand just how mighty and majestic He is.

Verse twenty one says, “Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.” Let’s look at what this verse is saying.

Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God. He is reigning over the earth. There is no being that can come close to His power and majesty and glory. Paul does not simply say that Jesus is above others rulers, but far above. He is exceedingly greater and more glorious than the next great human power. Not only that, but Kingdoms rise and fall. Powerful dominions may last for generations but history shows us that at some point they collapse. The Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medo Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Nazis have risen and fallen. America, the World Power at this current time, has already shown signs of crumbling. One day, America will fall.

But not Jesus, He continues to sit and rule and reign in heaven. He sits next to His Father with no threat of ever being dethroned. We saw in verse twenty that nothing could stop Him, not even all our sins, not even death itself. I don't know if men and women recognize that Jesus is truly inevitable. Nothing can ever change this.

Movies have powerful villains that seem to be impossible to defeat, but somehow, at the climax of the movie, the heroes figure out how to save themselves and the world and defeat this seemingly impossible and unbeatable power. This is not the case with God. Jesus already won. On top of that, He won before He actually physically won. There was never hope for the devil and his angels. No principalities, powers, might, or dominion ever had a chance.

Paul covers it all too. It was not only during his time on earth that Jesus ruled, but forever. That's why he states that it is "not only in this world" that Jesus reigns. He has and will continue to reign forever. No person will ever match His power. No technological advance or new weapon will ever even threaten Jesus’ position. His Words can wipe out what He made in an instant.

Understanding this makes the beginning of this book that much more incredible. He is so powerful and yet He chose us to be His. He is so powerful and yet He willingly died on the Cross! He left His home to be beaten and mocked and tortured and murdered so that we could know Him and enjoy Him and call Him our Father. The ultimate, inevitable Power, that has no need for us, died so that we can live. For this, the least we can do is try to live a holy and blameless life!
