Seek to See His Power

Ephesians 1:19

We saw in verse eighteen that Paul was praying that the Ephesians would gain spiritual wisdom so that their eyes may be enlightened and that they may see the hope of His calling and the riches of the glory of His inheritance. Verse nineteen shows us the third thing that Paul wants the Ephesians to understand. It says, “And what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.”

Why does Paul want the Ephesian's eyes to be enlightened to God’s power? Surely, they understood that He is powerful. I mean they know Jesus rose from the dead, they know God placed all our sins on Him so that they may be saved. They know about the Red Sea crossing (Exodus 14), the collapse of Jericho (Joshua 6), and the demolition of 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in a night (2 Kings 19) Clearly, they know about His power.

But Paul wants the Ephesians to experience how powerful He is, not just know about it. We may know about it, but when we truly get to know Him and we dive into a deeper and deeper relationship with Him, we will truly see just how indescribably powerful He is. We will stand in awe of His power. We will fear Him.

This is ultimately what Paul is praying for. He wants the Ephesians to get it. To see it. To stand in awe of Him. No, not even stand, but fall at His feet in reverence and adoration of Him.

This brings humility. When we see the power of God and begin to see His justice and grace alongside it, we begin to understand just how unworthy we are to be called His adopted children.

We will also glorify God more because we see how vast His grace and love are. It is incredible to see in comparison to our sinfulness. To see the power that He has and yet the love He shows us every day, adopting us and calling us His children cannot be fathomed. Additionally, the forgiveness that He has, graciously accepting our apology and willingly choosing to restore us.

Understanding the power of God is something that very few Christians tend to pray for. I am not sure if we just don’t think about it or we don’t view it as important. Perhaps we are more focused on praying for ourselves. The closer we get to God, though, the more we will want to learn about Him. The more we learn about Him, the more we will see our own sinfulness. The more we see our own sinfulness, the more we will glorify Him for what He has done. The more we glorify Him for what He has done, the more we will glorify Him for Who He is.
