Ephesians 1:14
We looked at verse thirteen last time and saw how each member of the Trinity has a role in our salvation. Specifically, we saw how the Holy Spirit seals and secures us in Him. In verse fourteen we see that truth stated even more clearly, and we also see why He seals us.
Ephesians 1:14 says, “who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” We know that “who” is the Holy Spirit based off of what we read in verse thirteen. So the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance. We know based on verse eleven what our inheritance is and who it is that has gifted us this inheritance. For a deeper dive into our inheritance you can look back at the article Our Inheritance.
We can also see that we are a purchased possession. Jesus had to pay for our sins, and He did so by shedding His blood and dying for us. He washed our sins away by His death. We saw in verse six that “in Him we have redemption through His blood.” We have been redeemed; our debt is paid. He bought us with His blood.
The Holy Spirit seals us. He is the guarantee that we have that we are forever His adopted children, forever inheriting what He has set aside for us, forever paid for by His blood. We cannot lose what the Holy Spirit secures for us!
The end of this verse tells us why He secures our spot as one of God’s adopted children. He does “to the praise of His glory”! It always comes back to this truth. God does everything that He does for His Own glory. The Holy Spirit seals us and secures us for God’s glory. We know based on verses that we have already read in this chapter that God loves us. I don’t want to keep repeating myself, but the truth is what we have seen already ties in together. He chose us. God chose us. He sent His Son to die for us. Was it for His Own glory? Yes! Was it for our good? Also yes!
The Holy Spirit indwells in us. He knows our sins better then we do. He is hurt by our sins more then we understand. Would He be justified in not sealing us? Based on our wickedness the answer is clear. Do we constantly disobey? Hopefully not. Do we constantly sin? Yes, we do.
Why then does the Holy Spirit suffer if He does not gain? Because His purpose is to glorify God! The Holy Spirit, God, does everything to glorify God!
Not only that, but Jesus does the same thing. In Romans 15:3 it says, “For even Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written, ‘The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.’” Jesus did not do anything for Himself, He did everything for God’s glory! He died to glorify God. Yet He also died to save us. He died to give us eternal life. He died so that we may be free from our sin.
God Himself sent His Son to die for us. He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell within us and help us. He did so for His own glory and so that we would not perish but have everlasting life. Don’t let the devil convince you that this truth is not incredible. Fight against your flesh which wants you to forget what He did.
This verse has summarized a few verses that we have already looked at. It may seem like nothing new, but it is there because that is what God wanted written. I hope you can agree that we have seen some powerful truths about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in this verse. I encourage you to ponder His wisdom and His sovereignty. Only an all-wise, all-knowing, all-powerful God could make Himself being glorified and us being saved and indescribably blessed a reality.
