1 Corinthians 13:7
“Love…bears all things”
We are now in verse 7 and are continuing to look at the positive aspects of love. In this article we focus on how love bears all things. A loving person is able to take the burden of situations away from those around them to help them.
It is difficult not to get overwhelmed in today’s world, especially in America where everything is so fast paced and cutthroat. Circumstances can stack up and before you know it you can become anxious and overcome with emotions. It can feel like there is a weight on your shoulders and you can’t get out from under it.
A loving person is the one that you typically run to when you are overwhelmed. You need someone there to help you, to bear some of the burden. Perhaps you don’t even realize that is what you need, but your loving spouse, parent, or friend recognizes it and helps take the weight you bear. Perhaps they help calm you down so that what you were anxious about no longer seems like a big deal. Perhaps they turn your tears into laughter.
This is what we are called to do. Of course we are sometimes going to be that anxious person, we are going to be that person who is overwhelmed. But we also need to be the person who lovingly bears all things.
The awesome thing about Christ is, even if we don’t have someone we can rely on and trust on the earth, we can rely on and trust Him. In Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” I don’t know if there is anything more comforting in today’s day and age where anxiety and depression are becoming more common then to hear Jesus tell us that He will bear all things for us.
Jesus is ready to bear your burdens for you. He wants you to come to Him and lay everything down at His feet. One of my favorite verses is 1 Peter 5:7 where Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, tells us to cast all our cares at His feet because He cares about us. We do not need to hold onto anything. Our anxiety is what he desires to bear. The overwhelming weight on our shoulders is what He wants to carry for us. Our emotional instability is what He wants to stabilize. He wants us all to come to Him because He loves us.
Bringing your burdens to Him will bring you great relief from your pain. It will produce real peace and real joy in your heart. But it will also bring Him great relief and peace and joy. When He sees you struggle with your anxiety or depression or the weight of the world that is on your shoulders and you don’t come to Him that hurts Him.
If you saw your child struggling with a heavy burden, and you knew you could help but they refused it and continued to struggle, wouldn’t this pain you? Would not your heart yearn to help them? Or if your spouse is dealing with a burden and they refuse to share it with you, would this not pain you? If we, being sinners, desire to help our children or our spouse, how much more does He desire to help us (Matthew 7:11)?
He loves us, and because He loves us, He desires to bear all things for us. Though we are wicked sinners, who sin against Him every single day, He loves us enough to yearn to take all our burdens. We may love family and friends, and may lovingly bear there burdens, but if they hurt us every day, would we then bear their burdens? We should, but I think a lot of us would admit we wouldn’t. If someone has even just made the same mistake time and again, we would likely help them out the first and perhaps the second time, but after the third time we would tell them they are on their own. Jesus never does that. He wants all of your burdens all of the time. No matter how often or how grossly you have sinned against Him, and no matter how many times you make the same mistake, He wants to carry your burden for you.
Let us remember this amazing example of Christ. Let us remember that we ought to lovingly bear the burdens of those around us even when they have hurt us or continue to make the same mistakes. And let us pray for wisdom and help in lovingly bearing all things for one another.
