Great men and women of God have dived into the deep wells of doctrine found within Scripture for millennia. It is through their prayers and study and our own time with Christ that we grow in our knowledge of the Savior and thereby sweeten our relationship with Him. The spiritual attributes of our Lord are often the focus of our studies and prayers, as they should be. We delve into the doctrines of redemption, of the church, and of sanctification – striving to glean every morsel of truth from them to better understand and know God and abide in Him.
In our pursuit of deeper knowledge though, have we left behind His first revelation to us? All believers know and believe in our God’s creation of the world. We give lip service to it and possibly even marvel a second or two at a bolt of lightning streaking across the night sky or at the majesty and fearsome power of the roaring ocean. But in our pursuit of the knowledge of God, have we neglected to seek Him and worship Him as He deserves in His handiwork so clearly displayed around us?
“But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” – Job 12:7-10
Our Lord’s creation cries out to the world, revealing His Godhead, His power, His sovereignty and much more. Yet, many believers view nature as simply a steppingstone for unbelievers and new converts to knowing God more to be eventually forsaken for the meatier studies of Scripture. But shouldn’t those deeper topics of God’s character and redemptive work only deepen our worship of Him when we behold the delicate pedal of a beautiful flower? When we see the maniac eccentricities of a squirrel darting across the street, do we ponder its Creator. We are surrounded with the result of the creative work of our Savior’s mind. Yet we go throughout the day oblivious to it.
What true worshipper of God does not secretly yearn to see the first tables of stone given to Moses on Mount Sinai, its contents etched with the very finger of God? But do we not have the true fingerprints of God all about us? When was the last time we sat and beheld a tree, a star, a bird, or even a grain of sand and magnified God? True love of God, true worship of God does not exclude the smaller, seemingly insignificant works of our beloved Lord. Next time we see a field of colorful flowers bedecking a meadow or raindrops cascading down from the dark sky, let us ponder and know that even in them we can see the mind and hand of God.
Our world looks, sounds, smells, feels, and operates exactly the way its Creator decided it should. When we pass by a tree stretching upward, look up and remember that our awesome God desired that it should grow upward. When we see the blue sky, remember that it was in the mind of Him that it should be just that color. When you see the veins on the back of a leaf, be reminded that God thought with his infinite creativity that each little leaf should appear in such a manner. No, we can see his fingerprints, the inner workings of his creative mind, and the showcase of his love for beauty. Why else create so much color in flowers spring and changing leaves in fall? So much of our world that He gifted to us serves no other practical purpose than to simply be beautiful…because it pleased Him. May we rejoice that we serve and know a God who has created and loved beautiful things to give us pleasure and joy and to remind us that our God is a God of beauty.
I pray that as we move about our days and nights that we will be in worshipful awe at every single piece of his creationary puzzle. Just as a husband adores the masterful painting of his wife, should we not relish and revel in the masterwork of our loving Savior? Any and every piece of nature could have been formed differently, but it wasn’t. Why? Because our God decided it should look exactly that way.
May our hearts overflow with worship and adoration for our God who has done all things well – from before the birth of time to the loving sacrifice of His own Son on our behalf. Truly, our God is a God of beauty, who can take our wickedness and use it to create the greatest tale of love, triumph, and glory for all of us to see and experience!
